Celebrating the nude

The human figure in art

By James Jack

When you look at a painting of a male nude, what is your first reaction? What about a nude woman? Why is the female nude synonymous with sexuality? What is it about the male figure that often scares people away while the female figure appears more inviting? In classical art, the nude is thought of as a representation of humanity in its purest state.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The woman who claims to be James Brown's fourth wife wants half of the singer's estate and to be allowed back into the South Carolina home she was locked out of soon after his death. Tomi Rae Hynie's lawyer said she filed a petition in Aiken County probate court Thursday, claiming that she is the surviving spouse of the singer and entitled to part of his estate, according to court documents obtained by the Associated Press.

Getting to "O"

Yes, yes, yes!

By Misty N. Moist

Orgasm, aka ejaculation, climax, spasm, convulsion, paroxysm, peak, frenzy, shudder, shiver, quiver and especially, unfurling waves of sexual pleasure. There's nothing quite like it. The writhing, tingling, toe curling, rock climbing, ascending, intensity building, body tensing, straining and…that face.

Getting goats and floating boats

By Tage Savage

Nobody gets my fucking goat! If there is, there'll be hell to pay, so Satan better pay up like Lando pays in Millennium Falcon, or else I'll be madder'n a hatter high on mercury! Anonymous 1 What gets you fired up? Like mad? Yes. Like people who do things that're just stupid for no reason, like stupid and idiotic.

The Don is not pleased

Why is it so hard to make a good game about the mafia?

By Robert Seitzinger

When considering how entertainment portrays the most notorious criminal organization in history, a few franchises should jump to mind: The Sopranos, The Godfather trilogy and most everything else that Robert de Niro or Al Pacino starred in. When it comes time for the jump to gaming, however, the best representations are found in the Grand Theft Auto series and Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.

Awkward moments

By Tage Savage

Anonymous 1 I'm doing an article about awkward and embarrassing situations. Can you tell me about one? From what period of my life? I have so, so many. Any period, anything that sticks out in your mind at this moment. There was this one thing that happened when I was in Catholic school when I was in seventh grade.

Your dead celebrity horoscope

Piano Tuner of Earthquakes

An art-house snoozefest

By Nick Buono

Piano Tuner of Earthquakes is the second full-length live-action film from the Quay brothers, a pair of identical twins better known for their weird, stop-motion animated shorts like The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb. And, judging by the outcome of this cumbersomely titled film, it might have been better if they had stuck to those.

A Valentine's night out

By Deeda Schroeder

If you are planning a romantic dinner for someone special on Valentine's Day, now's the time to get calling! The hot spots around town are almost booked, and it may be too late to book your favorite cozy booth for two. Even though more than two weeks away, we made calls to find out where to go if making a reservation soon and to find restaurants that won't be taking reservations at all.

Ha, Ha, Ha: the return of the '90s

Shawn Mullins, Clerks-lite and the ennui of menial labor in Delivery Boy Chronicles

By Ed Johnson

Delivery Boy Chronicles is a movie from a different era. I can only imagine that the creators (obviously steeped in the mystique of Kevin Smith) felt they had a really funny, original story on their hands. They also probably thought that having a has-been singer (Shawn Mullins of 1998's gruesome single "Lullaby") would help their cause.

Noise

The physical art of Dan Senn

By Georgina Ruff

For his first Portland gallery installation, Dan Senn's multi-dimensional Many Pairs Sounding fills the small rectangular room at Portland Art Center (PAC) with both audience and noise. On a cold Thursday night, a group of about 30 gathered upstairs to enjoy an informative lecture by Senn, who considers himself a viewer of his work.

Popular Music Board books bigger bands in bigger venues

By Matt Petrie

You may know the Popular Music Board as the purveyors of Portland State's "Noon Gigs," the twice-weekly midday shows in the Park Blocks and Parkway North. But the show put on by the PMB this weekend is a long way from just giving students something to do while they wolf down some falafel.

A new doom

Building on their time in the legendary band Sleep, Om continue to evolve their sonic maxim

By Ed Johnson

Among certain circles of music listeners, there is no more important recent band than Sleep. During the '90s, they helped jumpstart the neo-stoner rock and doom movement. Their legendary status mainly comes from their untimely implosion at the hands of major label pressure-as it turns out, recording a 64-minute-long single song called "Dopesmoker" (also known as "Jerusalem") doesn't endear you to the high marketing sensibilities of radio-obsessed majors.
